If mind and body be not one,

At enmity the two shall be.

-----------------------------------------

The former of the second free,

Discovers itself inert, -- no action

wrought or conjured from all its vaunted gifts.

Impotence shall forever be its curse,

Should it, for spite, abjure its lowly host.

Contempt becomes its only thought,

and mystery despised most.

-----------------------------------------

But body soured against the prompts

that within the mind reside,

wanders aimless, and blindly will be led

from stable stillness by fleeting phantoms

on which brute senses insatiably are fed.

-----------------------------------------

But if the mind will suffer to endure

the humility of fraught and frail clay,

and body deigns submission to alien commands,

Creation shall respond with jubilant array,

to the nobled work of thusly hallowed hands.
