Worth
Or the cost of leaving.
I taste you on the tip of my tongue
Like the words I forgot to say before you
Packed yourself up and stepped out of the car.
.
Nobody leaves like you do, in that mocking way
That reminds me of the shadows you do
Such a good job of mimicking.
.
I'm in a drought of compassion
Because you built this wall around the sky
And the clouds listen to you, who knows why.
.
This is a desert without your blood and tears
And I am roasting alive, so maybe it's
Not just fire and heat, but hellfire.
.
Maybe I'm screwed three times over.
Letting you leave was throwing your soul
Into the pit and now I wonder about your bones.
.
Have they gone to ash or will they fall from above
Like some twisted nightmare of fears
Spewed from the volcano's crown?
.
You should have gotten back in,
Slipping between the creaky door warped
By an accident and stayed there until night passed.
.
But you shut your hoodie in the door, broke your zipper
And called it a day with tears in your eyes
Like I couldn't see the truth.
.
What sort of shadow would I be
If I couldn't see the truth pouring out of that
Aching soul of yours, the one that dreams like it fucks.
.
Hard with a relentless rhythm that you think will get you
Everything you've ever hoped to want
When you know it won't.
.
You know that this run,
Can't end in anything other than ruin.
But maybe that's why you do it, to play pretend with the cosmos.
.
Maybe that's the ultimate cost of leaving, enduring the shadows
That swarm and swim in the mind, while dreaming
Of some other, impossible end.
