Worn Out Memories

Folded away in the drawer

Every word you said

Unravels and re-spins

They knit and knot themselves

Slowly clothing me

Building up layers

Textural and toned

Always more comforting

Then continuing alone

I see the sound transform

As it floats from the

Darkness of your throat

Waves stretch and wobble

Then start to overlap

Up and down beats become

The warp and weft

Weaving into fabric

Soft and cozy, they hold me

Your voice clothes me in contentment

Until I don’t need it anymore

Until one day, like a

stretched out threadbare sweater

I realize their time has come

I fold it gingerly, a packet of potpurri

Slide it into the back of the bottom drawer

Where I can always find them

Wrap myself in their familiar comfort

Take a look in the mirror

Anytime I need reminding

Of the precious words

I held so close to my heart
