Winter in Hell
The winter came without snow
No frost upon the ground
Just darkness in her bedroom
And fear without a sound
A woman held beneath his fists
Her body black and blue
He told her she was worthless
Until she thought it true
The windows held the moonlight
The walls concealed her cries
And every morning found her
With terror in her eyes
He dragged her through his anger
And threw her to the floor
Then stood above her shaking
And locked the bedroom door
The winter lived inside her
A cold she could not name
Her bruises told the story
Of his unholy shame
She learned to walk in silence
To never make a sound
For even breathing wrongly
Could bring his anger down
He kissed the wounds he'd given
And called his cruelty love
While heaven watched in silence
From somewhere far above
Her body grew so weary
Her spirit almost died
But somewhere deep inside her
A little girl still cried
One night she saw the doorway
And felt the winter air
She walked beyond his shadow
And left her sorrow there
The winter stayed behind her
Inside that house of hell
A woman once imprisoned
With stories left to tell
