A free verse poem

So tell me...

How does one learn to let go of love?

A love that was warm and familiar.

A love that made you feel safe and secure.

A love that made you feel alive.

Alive.

Oh my dear how you have craved that feeling for so very long.

No matter what, when it came you swore you would keep it.

That you would do whatever it took.

With that burden it felt as if you had covered yourself in gasoline and his touch was nothing but a innocent spark.

A spark that quickly erupted into dancing flames that were so bright and beautiful you couldn’t even tell it was burning you.

But that’s what fire does my dear.

It burns.

And my darling, don’t you know what becomes of a fire when it burns so beautifully in the night?

It burns out.

It becomes nothing but smoldering forgotten ashes.

And all you can do it watch as the ashes slip through your fingertips.

So tell me...

How do you get over a love like that?
