Over time, being told you are not good enough to follow your dreams can break you down. We should encourage everyone to follow their dreams, no matter what they are. This poem is about being told, you are not good enough throughout your childhood and what it does to your dreams. It’s not about writing, it’s about every childhood dream.

Why a Writer Has Self-doubt?

Not to follow your dream.

Is not to follow your heart.

Who would walk away

From dreams, that childhood screamed?

The person full of self-doubt

Who would depart a dream?

Why would they give up their dreams?

Self-doubt came about

Because loved ones had doubts.

The words to them seemed lame.

They took the dream as a game.

Becoming a writer is far out of reach.

You have unacceptable speech.

Your words have no meaning to me

Nor will they to anyone else.

Over the years, these words sink into the soul.

The soul holds them like it was a bowl.

Until writing is no longer a goal.

A part of the soul dies because of giving in to the unkind words

That was heard all throughout childhood.

There is no one else to blame but the writer.

The writer should have been a fighter.

But too many negative words were spoken

Of those the writer looked up to and wanted to be like.

Writers are gentle souls, who can easily be broken down.

Sensitive to the words of another, especially sisters and brothers.

Mothers, fathers, teachers, and friends all spoke against the dream.

They did not mean to be mean, that was just the way it seemed.

Making a living as a writer is not the easiest of things.
