Which Way Do I Go Without You

The door still closes with your echo inside it,

a soft and stubborn sound that will not fade,

as if the house remembers more than I can hold,

and keeps you living in its quiet bones.

Your shoes remain beside the worn-out step,

turned slightly, as though you paused mid thought,

I have not moved them, I cannot move them,

they feel like the last direction you took.

Morning comes, but it arrives without meaning,

light spills in and finds no purpose here,

I sit where you once folded into laughter,

and feel the absence settle into my chest.

I try to speak, but words fall back unformed,

there is no one to carry them anymore,

your name rises, then breaks before it lives,

a silence deeper than any night I knew.

They say the road goes on, that I must follow,

but every path divides and leads to you,

each turn becomes a circle I cannot leave,

each step returns me to the day you left.

I walk outside, the world continues blindly,

people pass with ordinary breath,

how can they not feel this tearing inside me,

how can the earth stay steady after this.

Your coat still hangs where winter once held you,

and I press my face into its fading trace,

not for comfort, but for proof you existed,

that love was real, and not just something lost.

Which way do I go without you beside me,

when even forward feels like going back,

I stand between what was and what is empty,

and neither place will let me rest.
