Where We Belong
Written for University United Methodist church in St. Louis many years ago
I'm not submitting this for the Home Poem challenge, because I'm not Vocal+ anymore. However, reading the challenge prompted reminded me of this poem so I hope you enjoy anyway.
A sense of belonging
A sense of hope
A feeling of longing
And trying to cope
A sense of tomorrow
Becoming today
But always the sense
We've somewhere to stay
A sense of here
A sense of now
A sense of where
And why and how
Our Father, our families
Our communities
Our home is where
We belong, Lord, with thee
I believe this poem stands on its own, but I would like to provide context of why I wrote it and what it means. About a decade ago, the church I was attending updated their motto to "Be You, Be Loved, Belong." The discussions behind picking that verbiage inspired me to write "Where We Belong" for the church. Sometime after this, a church member stopped me after Sunday service. She told me her home had recently caught fire. She said that the words captured how our church had swept in to make her feel welcome and safe even with that tragedy. I wrote the poem, but it means something different to me now thanks to her.
