Where the Dead Flowers Go

Bet you wondered this one too

Where the Dead Flowers Go

Where do dead flowers go when nobody comes
Do they sleep in the dark where the cold earth hums
Do they dream of the hands that once held them tight
Or simply forget they were ever alive

I kept your old letters beneath my bed
Like pieces of something that already was dead
I read them at night when the whole house was still
And wondered how love could have made me so ill

I gave you my summers, my winters, my rain
I gave you my laughter, my sorrow, my pain
You took what you wanted and left me the rest
A woman still breathing but never at rest

The years kept on moving, I stayed where I stood
Still waiting for love to become what it should
The mirror grew older, the eyes became tired
The woman I was slowly vanished, expired

Sometimes I hear footsteps outside in the rain
And think you have come to collect me again
But nobody enters, the doorway stays bare
And something inside me still waits for you there

I wonder if flowers remember their spring
If broken old hearts remember anything
Perhaps they just open, then quietly close
And nobody notices where the heart goes

I wasted my youth on a promise of you
I wasted my mornings believing it true
And now when I think of the life I could choose
There isn’t much left that I haven’t yet lost

So where do dead flowers go when they die
Do they turn into dust, do they fade from the sky
Or live in the hearts of the foolish who know
That some things stay dead but refuse still to go
