What’s Wrong With Being Happy
I am jumping for joy

What’s Wrong With Being Happy
They stare when I laugh for no reason at all
As though joy itself should be chained to the wall
Questions arrive with a sharp little sting
Why are you smiling, what’s happened, what thing
The world grows addicted to sorrow and ache
People trust sadness far more than they take
Happiness somehow appears suspicious
Like peace cannot possibly ever be real enough
I spent years drowning in rooms without light
Crying through endless unbearable nights
Now sunlight reaches the cracks in my skin
Why should I apologise healing within
What’s wrong with being happy for once
Why must delight feel foolish or blunt
Why do they search for the pain underneath
As though contentment is make-believe
Maybe some people feel safer in grey
Comforted watching bright colours decay
Misery gathers and clings to its own
Fearful of seeing another outgrown
Still I will dance when the music feels right
Still hold small moments of warmth in my life
After surviving the storms that I knew
Joy feels rebellious and painfully true
So let them whisper whatever they choose
I have already paid too many dues
Nothing is wrong with a heart finally free
Nothing is wrong with happiness in me
