What Remains After It's Gone

years turned to seconds

as they dwindled away

my memory threatens

the things that you used to say

each time that you held me

and smiled that smile

i knew what a blessing

i had for a while

you worked hard, and loved harder

i never doubted you cared

when i fell you were there

and ran your hands through my hair

so tender and loving

with hands as hard as a stone

you protected and held me

i never once felt alone

until today at this moment

when i am faced with goodbye

if you were scared, you didn't show it

you wiped the tears from my eyes

and promised that we would be together

and you'd be waiting for me

so i sit and breathe in the heather

and meet you here, under this tree

where we've laid you to rest

and your spirit is free

cuz this life is only a test

and salvation's the key
