for your birthday

they made a heart

by leaving

everything out

sprinkles, candles

a celebration

built around absence

flames flickering

voices singing

someone will tell you

to ‘make a wish’

no one will ask

why the heart

has nothing in it

the cake will be sliced

what was missing

will be chewed

swallowed

I selected Michael Owczarek's poem Belated because he was a writer that Vocal is loving and I liked the picture because I would make something like it, though it’s not really silly.

The description that I typed in was: heart shaped birthday wish

I chose the picture from Belated for Sasha's challenge, which I only learned about from another writer Julie Lacksonen who used a picture from one of my poems, Don't Speak to inspire her poem https://vocal.media/poets/blowing-raspberries
