What I Refused to See
I called it love when it was something smaller,
Something that asked less and took far more,
I ignored the cracks that spread between us,
Pretending they were not there before.
You showed me who you were in pieces,
In words that slipped and actions that stayed,
Yet I softened every sharp edge you carried,
And told myself I was not afraid.
Short sighted in ways I cannot defend now,
Blind to the truth laid out in plain sight,
I chose comfort over what felt honest,
I chose to stay instead of what was right.
There were signs I stepped around carefully,
Excuses I built like walls in my mind,
Each one easier than facing the reality,
That you were never truly kind.
Stupidity wears a quiet kind of shame,
It does not shout or demand to be known,
It settles slowly in choices repeated,
Until you realise you stood there alone.
I see you clearly now without distortion,
No softness left to blur what is real,
And though it hurts to admit what I missed,
It hurts less than pretending not to feel.
