What Could Have Been

After It All

Do you see a small piece of them everywhere you go?

That familiar head scratch catching your eye,

as a stranger swiftly brushes past you in the street.

That same scent that kissed your nostrils months ago,

now trails behind them,

memories begin to rise up,

from deep within you,

reminding you of places,

that you forgot even,

existed.

Your heart thudding uncontrollably,

your breath catching in your throat,

your neck starts to ache

as your head disobediently follows,

the aching of your heart.

Trying to distinguish if their messy hair,

is the same shade of brown,

that you fell in love with,

months ago.

The same skip in their step,

making you hesitate,

if it is indeed,

a stranger,

after all.

Adrenaline vibrates through your body,

the urge to run after them,

calling you,

to say something,

anything,

at all.

But you're stuck,

like a rabbit in headlights.

Your eyes glued to them,

like your feet glued to the floor.

With each second that passes,

you know the possibility is slipping through your fingers.

as quickly as the common sense is slipping out of your mind.

Finally they turn their head,

whether it's to cross the street,

or because they've sensed you,

you do not know.

As their blue eyes catch your own,

your lungs finally collapse,

beneath the weight of it all.

It's not them.

You kick yourself for even thinking that it could be.

You caught yourself off guard,

You thought that you didn't care.

But in that very moment,

you realised you've been lying to yourself,

so very fluently,

for so very long,

that you even tricked yourself.
