What Are Friends For

An irregular ode…

I don’t know

what it feels like

to have a close friend…

but I imagine it’s like

my on and off again relationship

with my glasses…

how I always slowly blink

open my eyes and smile

when I think of them…

how my mornings begin blurry

and I try to stand alone,

then I reach out

because I count on their direction…

Their vision gives me clarity

more than any other contacts,

and my I’s become we

as I find more meaning

when we keep in touch…

we’d confidently

face the world together,

rarely seen apart

and almost unrecognizable

when separated…

Sometimes I even look in the mirror

and question if they need me too,

as my world isn’t the same

without each other…

our bond is a commitment

that sets me straight,

but it also scares me…

I hate to see them broken,

give them too much of me

and then too little,

don’t see eye to eye,

refuse their help,

try too hard

to do life all on my own…

I know what it feels like

to lay sick, trying to forgive

myself for losing sight

of what’s really important…

I don’t know

what it feels like

to have a close friend…

but if it’s like

my on and off again

relationship

with my glasses,

then I know that

somehow they’ll be around

to catch me

when I lose

my balance…

someone I will carry

with me forever…
