Whale Song

Maternal Instinct

By Celia in UnderlandPublished 8 months ago Updated 4 months ago 1 min read

Whale hunters target the baby first.

They shoot it with a harpoon

and watch it through the

They wait –

for the

ocean to stain red.

Before taking aim again.

But the mother never leaves.

She stays a foot or so away, knowing that she too,

will die at the tip of the hunter’s dart.

And the sound of her own melancholic song –

is the last that either will hear.

    Greed is callous. 🥲

I see both truth and metaphor here. Really well done; I find that real events like this often hold sad lessons for humanity, and parallel our lives. I applaud your crafting of this one, Celia. 👏👏👏

Fucking hell. I've got suncream in my eyes. Dear lord, I don't know whether to hit subscribe or outright avoid you!

Heartbreaking. And you get so much here into so few words. So, so sad.

Oh this is awful and beautiful all at once. A pox on whalers I say 😥

So sad, yet so beautiful. There's nothing quite like a mother's love.

    Heartbreaking, but so we'll done!

  • Animals feel pain just like us humans. If we have a right to live on earth, then animals have those rights too. Karma will get all those who have harmed animals.

  • May there never ever again be a market for anything belonging to whales other than the beauty of their songs & devotion.
