They say love begins with a heartbeat.
Ours began
when the moon fell asleep
inside your eyes
and my shadow suddenly learned your name.
You touched my hand,
and somewhere beneath the earth,
a thousand sleeping flowers
opened their eyes.
We walked together
through a forest that had no trees,
only memories hanging from invisible branches.
You picked one.
It was yesterday.
You gave it to me
and said,
“Keep this.
It still smells like us.”
So I placed it inside my chest.
Now every time my heart beats,
a little piece of our past
turns into a bird
and flies through me.
You became the morning
I could never finish waking from.
I became the night
that refused to let you disappear.
Between us,
the stars built a small house.
They gave us a window made of rain,
a door made of sunlight,
and a bed where our dreams
could sleep beside each other.
Sometimes we didn't speak.
Our silence grew wings.
It flew around the room,
sat upon our shoulders,
and whispered things
our mouths were too afraid to say.
Then you smiled.
And the universe lost its balance.
The oceans climbed into the sky.
The clouds began blooming.
The clocks forgot their numbers.
Even death, for one impossible moment,
stood outside our door
and waited patiently.
Because there are loves
that belong to ordinary people,
and then there are loves
that make ordinary things
forget what they are.
That is what we became.
Not two people.
Not two hearts.
But one strange little universe
wearing two bodies,
wandering through time,
holding hands,
while somewhere beyond the last star,
a lonely moon
keeps telling our story
to the darkness.
