we are all made of stories
an ode to the writers who raised me

I was raised by writers:
Watts taught me to question,
when the world told me to stop,
Fitzgerald revealed the faults of ambition,
and yet, my father did not.
Tolstoy was the first to break my heart,
while Bukowski sought to mend it.
Tolkien built worlds in my mind,
temporary escapes,
for when my mother tried to end it.
These writers did their best
to raise a decent human being,
they taught a little girl how to fight
when she always felt like flee-ing.
Yes, I was raised by writers,
who trained me as best they could.
Their words gave me comfort
in a time
where I was so misunderstood
- we are all made of stories
