For When the World is Cold

I read the James Herriot series of books beginning with All Creatures Great and Small when I was in high school.

One of my favorite passages is when he is newly married.

He comes home in the middle of the night having been working in bitter cold and completely chilled to the bone.

When he crawls into bed, his wife who still half asleep, slides over and wraps herself around him, letting the warmth of her body take the chill from his.

In the passage he expresses wonder at her love and generosity.

To his mind if you are safe and warm and something icy cold comes along beside you...you move away from not toward it.

He is amazed by her kindness.

That passage has always been a picture in my mind of what a home should be.

It is where you go, when you come in from the icy, harsh world outside.

It is where you go to get warm again...physically, emotionally and spiritually.

And when the people you love...

can't help but bring the coldness of the world inside with them...

you wrap yourself around them and hold on till it all goes away.
