Warm sunshine saves my fuel bill

Thank god for the summer

Warm sunshine saves my fuel bill

Warm sunshine, fall into this room,

Stretch out your light across these walls,

Push back the weight, the quiet gloom,

That lingers where the cold air calls.

The meter waits with steady claim,

A ticking sound I cannot fight,

It counts each hour, it marks each flame,

And turns my warmth to cost each night.

I sit and watch the numbers rise,

With every breath the cold draws near,

There is no space for compromise,

When heat itself becomes a fear.

I wrap in layers, thin and worn,

And still the chill finds ways inside,

Each early dusk, each frozen morn,

Reminds me what I cannot hide.

But then you come without a price,

No letter sent, no warning tone,

A quiet gift, a soft device,

That warms a place I call my own.

You touch the glass, you cross the floor,

You rest upon my waiting skin,

You give me what I can’t afford,

And ask for nothing back within.

No debt to pay, no sum to clear,

No final word, no rising bill,

Just silent light that settles here,

And bends the cold against my will.

So stay a while, do not be brief,

The world outside can take its fill,

You bring a small, defiant relief,

Warm sunshine saves my fuel bill.
