Waiting for the Silence to Shrink
On Love, Distance, and the Things Time Cannot Promise

Sometimes, what happens between two people
grows larger than reality itself.
The distance widens.
The silence settles in.
We no longer laugh the same way.
We no longer love the same way.
The silence has become enormous,
and the space between us
has grown loud.
You stare into nothing,
waiting for everything.
Waiting for all the things
that were left behind in a single kiss.
You are left holding the love,
while your heart wages war
and your mind drifts through darkness.
It is no longer what it used to be.
Not bad.
Not good.
Just different.
We spend our nights chasing the sheep
we were supposed to count before falling asleep.
We wander along rivers in our dreams.
Maybe they are only moments.
Only passing events.
Nothing can be that terrible.
But can it be good enough?
All that remains
is to wait for the silence to grow smaller.
To let time do what everyone says it does.
"Give it time."
That is what they always say.
But does time always heal?
I stay.
And I no longer know
whether I am waking up,
or still dreaming.
