Waiting Beside the Worms

Holding onto Something

You may wonder why I lay here amid the crumbled dirt and root

Awaiting some poor fool to walk by that I may snatch his foot

You see I’m not like the others here, lifeless, lying in a crate

No, this is all my plan to catch the man who stole my wife and estate.

It’s really quite clever, this plan that I’ve laid

I’m covered in a thin layer of dirt in this hole that I’ve made

And when that thief comes a walking right up to this spot

I’ll drag him down and leave him for the evil he sought.

Yes, now I can hear him, his footsteps grow louder

Oh how I long to hear howls of fear, for his whole frame to flounder

That’s it, just a little bit closer, then he’ll be mine.

But now that he’s here, I have no strength to find?

What the devil is this feeling, am I frozen in ice?

My arms, are they riddled with lead or constricted in a vice?

He’s right here, by jove, if I could, I would nab him.

This heathen of heathens, oh, the heavens damn him!

Now he’s gone just as fast as he came,

This black hearted fellow for whom my sorrows’ to blame

Oh well, I’ll wait again, what’s another few years?

I’ve been here 10 already among my skeletal peers.

But make no mistake, I’m not like the others here lying lifeless in a crate

How could I be, what when I’m filled with such a lively hate

Or was my hesitation, not merely just nerves?

Am I really lying here among all the worms?
