An elder crosses the street
Molasses crawl
With a cane or walker
Car engines impatient
Exhaust ghosts haunt the perimeter
A wary side-eye, but yesteryear's pride inside
Their bones brittle, a snap away from heaven
Somebody’s mother; somebody’s father
My heart cries, a forlorn ache
All I do is watch.
