Verde (Green)

A poem about love and resistance

Everything that I love about Honduras is green

The palm trees at the side of the beach

The mountains that proliferate in fertile lands

The ravines that embellish our rivers

Green, like the mango that hangs from a tree in the corner of my backyard

Green, like the leafy valleys that extend as far as the eye can go

The valleys, the rivers, the basins, the fertile lands, sacred lands

For which people murder

Lands in which the ones on top

Kill at night, are a celebrity by day

Green, like the farmers’ lands

Lands that were stolen, expropriated, terrorized

Green, like the dollar, that controls all

The dollar, who sends for death squads, for ZEDES, for the drug that it obsesses about Green, like the stems of the bananas

That took down governments

Green, but more so turquoise

Like the beaches that perfuse with intoxicating colors

Colors that bathe our beaches

Beaches that have been invaded

Entire communities that have been displaced

By luxury hotels that nobody can pay

Green, like the dollar

Whom the elite love so dearly

The dollar, the only thing they care about

The dollar, that exploits us

Who sells us our death and always charges
