the pine tree and the Elm

Painting by Raine Fielder

Bitter, blistering cold, dead of winter

Needles and wax, transpiration

Full and lush, flourishing pine

Snow covered branches dust the ground

In the coldest night, she’s fine

Changing, falling, dying

Unable to hold to the sun, deciduous

Born to lose, barren Elm

Pity and remorse

Twisted, sparse, overwhelmed

Then comes spring

Both remain

One with her heart on her branches

One designed to hide her pain

Dichotomy aside

Both endured the freeze

For their strength is in their foundation

And not within their leaves

Loved this poem, and the last line is very powerful "For their strength is in their foundation / And not within their leaves" Really lovely.💙Anneliese
