Treat me like the dog

A Poem

I have something of a strange request

It’s neither a jibe, nor is it a jest.

If you could look beyond the fog

I want you to treat me like the dog.

Your words are kinder with softer tones;

You forever throw him verbal bones.

He wags his tail and your face glows

Bringing you joy from head to toes.

He gets every hug, cuddle and kiss

He gets all the things from you I miss.

“Jealous of a dog?” I hear you shout.

No, it’s not something I’m proud about.

I’m aware of how ridiculous it sounds.

And I know it’s based on irrational grounds.

But please don’t tsk! And please don’t tut;

And just treat me like the household mut.
