Transience
To the moments that take our breath away and define what it is to feel alive
I look at the ocean
this body of water that
stretches beyond the seas of my homeland
as if it reached the end of the world
Mountains rise from its depths
creating ranges
the spines of my nation at the tip of the sea
This is one of those moments
Timeless moments, floating untethered and
somehow separated from the timeline of
past, present, and future
Those moments that stretch on forever yet
happen in the span of seconds
Transient moments
Moments that take your breath away
Moments that remind you, however briefly, that
you are an interconnected being
A part of something greater and bigger than yourself
Something that is found both inside you and
out there, in the big vast universe
It is sunset and the world becomes
bathed in pink and yellow
orange and red
The sun shines bright just
above the horizon and I think this
This is what it feels like to be Alive
To feel the breeze on my skin and
see a world so beautiful that
my soul aches to be a part of it
To become sand and salt water and
live forever here, in this moment
To dance with the crashing of the waves and
the push and pull of the tide
To be one with the stillness captured
like sand in an hourglass
And then those moments pass and
you are left feeling nostalgically warm
A little lighter and a little fuller in different places
You know this moment is gone forever and
you will never be the same
The moment touched you and left a mark
And now it is gone
The sun falls below the horizon
A dog barks and suddenly
the moment ends
The hourglass breaks and time once again
moves forward with every second
The pink and yellow
orange and red fade away into night
I stay still, savoring the dissolving remains of this moment
feeling as if I have both lost and gained something
And knowing that those moments are
out there in the world and
it is my life’s adventure
to find them
