I think your dad was giving you a talking-to,
Warning you never to let go:
Paternal solicitude.
Suddenly, a sanguine clap, blast, crack,
Daddy’s hand slipping from yours:
Body akimbo.
Is it any wonder that you were undone?
Soul massacred, like your father’s flesh and bone:
Piteous ruin.
Me — driven to ink this poem so that one day you could know,
Strangers eternally weep, howl, and groan for the fleeing wee girl:
Meaningless saltwater.
We pray for your incontrovertible healing and courage,
And the vigor to become a quintessential warrior-for-change:
Triumphant Phoenix.
Never alone.
