I think you and I can agree that this world needs a heap of inspiration, what with Covid, threats of nuclear war, inflation, crazy gas prices, and other rot. It needs to be reminded that love and goodness exist, and that, together, people are powerful enough to overcome anything that’s thrown their way.

I was teaching English at a local high school years ago when I grew worried about a ninth grade student (let’s call him Billy). Billy regularly got suspended (was on the verge of expulsion), appeared to be in a gang (from what I could tell), and never once came to class with pencil, paper, or any other supplies (I supplied those for him each day he attended — sometimes you have to pick your battles). It troubled me that seemed to have no interest in school or his own future, as evidenced by chronic absenteeism. Since the typical ninth grader is about 14 years old, I was especially concerned.

Vocal Media had intrigued me for months. I'd been a regular Medium contributor, but something about Vocal just tugged at my heart. I liked the personal feel of it. The writing challenges excited me to no end. And the entire vibe just felt amazing. It felt like home. So, I decided to join. In fact, I just bought a year-long subscription, hoping for a good fit and much success (fingers crossed).

Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. And nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of your heart. Yet, we scream anyway, despite the universe's efforts to silence us. Why? Because we have to.

Hidden by masks, some people think they are invisible. I’ll bet that’s what Ratchet Woman thought when we came across each other in Walmart.
