tied to the tracks

The last time you held me before you said goodbye all I could think was

I love you.

I love you I love you I love you.

I love you until the world falls apart over and over

I kept thinking how naive I once was

or maybe still am

to think I could love you and let you go

body and heart in one piece.

I remember the first time I ever saw you and

how the words “take a chance” left your mouth

like caramel spooling down my throat.

I thought of how your eyes undressed my conscience

left their terra-cotta clay handprints on

the bare chest of my mind.

How you looked at me like the most shapely incarnation you’d ever seen.

How you still look at me that way.

And I remember that grief with

her heavy wet clothes

is knocking at the door as soon as you leave

with our sopping loss in her hands.

Shes got a knife for my chest

I lent it to her when I took the caramel chance and

kissed you.

I only know how to love when I'm tied to the tracks with the train coming.
