Whispers. Murmurs. Hushed tones
Questions upon questions
There’s too many unknowns
Just try to carry on with lessons
Feeling the air thicken
Do you think it will happen?
Heart beats quicken
Nothing will happen
But do we know for sure?
Just keep moving forward
Make the room secure
All I can give is my word
Keep calm, stay cool
They need you to
Trust in the school
There’s nothing left to do
Don’t panic, don’t feed into it
But what if it’s real?
What if there’s truth to it?
It just seems to unreal
To think that there’s a threat
To think you need to protect them
From the cruel idea of a threat
Of a school shooting.

The Golden Valley
The difference between light and dark could be as quick and simple as a flip of a switch, the drawing of a curtain, the opening of one’s eyes. It could be more gradual like the slow adjustment of the diaphragm on a microscope, the turn of a planet on its axis, the growing light as you approach the end of a tunnel. A flicker in the dark, a steady glow in the distance, a flash in the night sky.
