From the Suburban Woods series photo by River Joy

sleep sweetly my young friend

tomorrow is a new day

we roll around and sweat it out

until the sun has set

we are now tamed, tempered, and free

within these four walls of course

i've never met a human being

who wishes away from these suburban woods

.

we grow stronger with familiarity

and weaker as it is undone

our families cry through all the lies

and we learn to live as one

our neighbors hit the lights out

we turn up our TV

i've never met a living soul

who wants to turn from

these suburban woods

.

oh my power during the day

and fear throughout the night

this may not be what we asked for

but it's the closest to being alive

the daze has lifted for me my friend

soon it will for you as well

till i decide to run

from these tame gardens

they call The Suburban Woods
