The Worth of Jesus' Blood

A poem of thanksgiving, from the Upper Room to the empty tomb

By Dr. George Shannon FergusonPublished 11 days ago • 3 min read

As You ate the last meal with Your friends,
Knowing You only had a few hours until Your life would end,
You looked to the friend You knew would betray You.
You smiled at him, already forgiving Judas for what he was about to do.

For thirty pieces of silver he sold You away,
But the worth of Your blood, no silver could pay.
You smiled as each breath You took was coming to an end;
You were saying Your last goodbyes to all Your friends.

You went to the garden and stayed...
There You talked to God and prayed.
Your sweat fell like blood as You knelt on the ground;
"Not My will, but Thine" was the only sound.

Then Judas came and betrayed You with a kiss;
They arrested You that night, and You still loved him through this.
And Peter, who swore he would follow wherever You go,
Denied You three times before the rooster could crow.

You went to the square with grace;
The courage never once left Your face.
We, the very people You were dying for,
Beat You until You dropped to the floor.

Forty times, my Savior, we cracked that whip across Your back;
With each lash, Your skin was ripped open and cracked.
Yet every stripe that tore Your skin apart
Became the healing for my broken heart.

You took that for me... Lord, we are unworthy to stand
Before Your glory, yet You bled by our own hand.
After the beating we laid upon You,
As if that were not enough, what else did we do?

We pressed a crown of thorns upon Your head,
And down Your face the blood ran red.
And when our mocking was finally through,
There was one more thing that we would do:

We made You drag a cross twice Your size,
As Your strength gave way before our eyes.
As You carried this cross...
Your loved ones looked at You, feeling lost.

We laughed, spat, and threw dirt at You.
No one who has ever walked this earth will know what You went through.
I only hope that the one person who helped carry Your cross
Let You know that all of mankind was not lost.

THANK YOU... for every time You fell.
THANK YOU... for every cry that saved my soul from hell.
THANK YOU... for bearing each time we laughed and scorned.
THANK YOU... for each moment You were beaten and torn.
THANK YOU... for each tear that dropped from Your eye.
THANK YOU... for each ounce of pain, though You did not have to die.
THANK YOU... for loving, dying, and forgiving me.
THANK YOU... though I am as unworthy as can be.
THANK YOU... for the blood that has set me free.

Once You came to the place You knew You would die,
We drove nails into Your hands and feet as the pain made You cry.
After all the beating and all the pain,
The love You had for us did not wane.

Then, through all the suffering You bore,
You prayed to the Father as never before:
"FATHER, FORGIVE THEM, FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO."
Loving mankind even after all we put You through.

As You hung on the cross dying,
Your family at Your feet crying,
Foolish sinners still denying,

You saw Your mother weeping there beneath the tree;
"Woman, behold thy son," You said so tenderly.
A dying thief beside You cried, "Remember me";
You promised him paradise and set that sinner free.

Your blood was spilled for me;
Your love burns for eternity.
You died for my soul,
Gave Your warm blood to a world so cold.

As the life of Your body was slipping away,
Your last words were heard as You began to say...
"IT IS FINISHED."
Then Your head hung, and Your life diminished.

And in the temple, the veil was torn in two;
The way to the Father was opened, Lord, through You.
But early that Sunday, the stone rolled away;
The tomb was empty, and death lost the day.

The blood that was shed was not shed in vain;
You rose from the grave, and forever You reign.
Through Your pain, Your sacrifice, Your love... we,
We as human beings, can be forgiven... even me.

No silver or gold could pay the price of my soul;
Only the worth of Your blood could make me whole.
As a human being... Your servant... Your child,
I give You praise and glory in a world defiled.

I WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU WENT THROUGH,
BUT I WILL GLORIFY YOU... THANK YOU... I LOVE YOU.
