The Woman Who Fed The Moon

She told the story to join the gossip,
But forgot the moon was listening,
She dressed the truth in borrowed clothes,
Then watched the rumours glistening.

A whisper slipped beneath the door,
And wandered through the sleeping town,
By morning every stranger knew
A story that had travelled round.

The trees began to shake their heads,
The river carried words downstream,
While somewhere in the silver mist
The truth woke up inside a dream.

She never saw the shadow there,
That followed every word she said,
For gossip has a strange old way
Of growing legs beneath its head.

The moon looked down with knowing eyes,
And stars refused to take her side,
For secrets hate a crowded room
When everyone has something to hide.

So let them talk beneath the moon,
Let every whisper find the sky,
For truth may walk with muddy feet,
But truth does not know how to die.

And when the morning kissed the rooftops,
The gossip had begun to fade,
But every word she threw like stones
Still knew exactly where they stayed.

The wind collected all the whispers,
And scattered them beyond the sea,
While she stood wondering in the silence
What the truth had yet to be.

Then the moon went pale with morning,
And the last dark secret flew,
For stories may belong to everyone,
But the truth belongs to you.
