Independence Day is a joyous celebration

Across this truly blessed nation.

Barbecues and drinks with family and friends.

Music and fireworks, often how the night ends.

But the day touches hearts so much more

When we watch the Stars and Stripes gracefully soar.

Hold it still, honor expressed.

Show pride in our great land,

And extend a loving hand,

Spreading friendship, freedom is our stand

This is for the nurse who visits a lonely patient

Holds a hand, smiles, and lets him vent.

This is for the teacher with a crying child whose parents don’t care.

He wipes away the tears and says that he is there.

And extend a loving hand,

Spreading friendship, freedom is our stand

This is for those who serve in fire and police uniforms,

Helping those in great distress.

This is for those driving trucks for countless miles

And chefs and wait staff, serving food to impress.

For the Coasties, guarding our beloved shores,

For the Navy, braving the ocean that roars,

And the Air Force pilot on whose wings she soars,

For the Army, protecting mine and yours,

And the Marines, bravely charging beaches by the scores.
