The Unfinished Goodbye

A journey through memory’s stubborn grip written in a Villanelle.

By Tim CarmichaelPublished 10 months ago 1 min read

In shadows cast by dreams that softly fade,

The traces of your laughter haunt my mind,

A hush in the night, where love once played.

*

Each memory a ghost that will not trade,

For time’s cruel dance left longing intertwined,

In shadows cast by dreams that softly fade.

*

A heart once bright now bears the scars displayed,

Obsessions born of ties we cannot bind,

A hush in the night, where love once played.

*

I search for solace in the choices made,

But find in every path a bitter kind,

In shadows cast by dreams that softly fade.

*

The heart’s persistence, relentless and delayed,

In every ounce of yearning, hope entwined,

A hush in the night, where love once played.

*

Forever drawn to what the past conveyed,

A haunting waltz with all that’s left behind,

In shadows cast by dreams that softly fade,

A hush in the night, where love once played.
