The Strength Within

Both his security and his cage

He wears his camouflage in a manner that depicts reality,

Flouncing his hidden personality in ways you and I can only assume,

Hidden is his vulnerabilities, his weaknesses and his dreams,

His societal persona is carefully cultivated into the perfect costume.

**

He wanders the streets tall and proud, while quivering inside,

A smile alights upon his glorious face, as dread sinks within his chest,

He hauntingly projects a confidence of self esteem,

But it’s his self hatred he struggles with at best.

**

His skin has thickened from past turmoil,

His heart guarded from the professed love of yesteryear,

He hides the thorns that irritate his side,

Listening carefully to the unsaid betrayals he fears he’ll hear.

**

He has an inner strength that we can only marvel upon,

One built brick by brick to shore up any inner cracks,

Experience after experience training his psyche,

Despondent at the abilities he feels he lacks.

**

Daily challenges are set and he rides the testament of courage,

Pushing himself in torture to enable the best to arise,

Stumbling blocks are tossed aside in a show of temper,

Each fortitude adding to his perfect disguise.

**

As the sun sinks upon another day examined through pain,

And the darkness cloaks his shoulders to hide him from sight,

He allows the tears to flow in an effort to heal his broken heart,

Only allowing his weakness to greet the darkest night.

**

He hides from the world when his strength lets him down,

Not forever — no, only while he resets, giving him the freedom to bind his rage,

Strapping it into a cage of heightened steel; imprisoned,

Until he is ready to reenter the world’s falsifying stage.

**

For the one that loves him to his very core,

He’ll welcome her in, placing his vulnerability in her hands,

His gooey soft centre will be fully awakened,

Gifted to the only one who understands.

**

In turn she’ll caress his pain while it bleeds upon his skin,

Staunching the flow of agony in which his heart resides,

Awakening his lost emotions to be rekindled in her love,

Until he finds the courage to endow her with all he hides.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Awww, so happy that he has her! This was so sweet!

  • The trick is to recognize him for what he is before falling for someone who's secrets are more insidious.
