The Spiral Staircase
The spiral staircase went up and up and up
Till it reached the very top of the sky
I couldn’t climb it, it was far too high
So I sat at the bottom wondering why
I imagined what it was there for
And wondered what it could possibly mean
Then I saw all my old dreams
Fomenting on the stairway
There were dreams we could never get back again
Dreams that were old and spent
Dreams that had faded along the way
Dreams that were never meant
So I climbed it slowly, step by step
Taking care with every stair
But I didn’t even get halfway
Before I stopped and looked down there
I looked down and I was neither up nor down
I was stuck in the middle on the way
But was I on the way up
Or was I on the way down that day?
I scratched my head and said I don’t know
Where do I go from here with a frown?
The staircase seemed to go on forever
But I still had to find my way around
Does the staircase go to infinity
Infinity and beyond?
Is there a beginning, or is there an end?
Or is the answer hidden beyond?
I guess if I just sit here doing nothing
I’ll never know what lies ahead
So I took another step upon the stairway
And left those doubts inside my head
The dreams I thought were old and spent
Were waiting there for me to see
Perhaps they hadn’t disappeared at all
Perhaps they were still a part of me
So onwards and upwards with my dreams
I must go, whatever I may find
One step at a time upon the stairway
Leaving all my doubts behind
