The Singer Who Could Not Step Forward

She held the weight of hidden sound,

a voice that lived beneath her breath,

it stirred within her quiet chest,

yet feared the edge of open depth.

The stage would call with distant glow,

a place where voices rise and fall,

but in her mind it grew too vast,

a towering and endless wall.

She knew each note, each careful line,

the rise, the break, the perfect tone,

yet doubt would gather in her throat,

and claim that voice was not her own.

Behind the curtain she would stand,

and hear the shifting, waiting crowd,

her heart would beat against her ribs,

too fast, too sharp, too fierce, too loud.

A single step would feel too far,

a breath would catch, a hand would shake,

and in that pause the moment slipped,

a chance too fragile not to break.

But still she sang where none could see,

in quiet rooms and shadowed space,

her voice would open like the sky,

with strength no fear could then erase.

In mirrors dim she faced herself,

and saw the truth she could not hide,

a singer born with something rare,

yet held in place by fear inside.

Days turned to years, yet still it burned,

that need to stand within the light,

to let the voice she carried deep,

be heard beyond the edge of fright.

And then one night, with trembling breath,

she stepped where she had feared to go,

the silence fell, the world stood still,

and time itself began to slow.

Her voice broke through the fragile air,

not perfect, but alive and true,

and in that sound she found herself,

the strength she never fully knew.
