The Ship Of Loveless Fools

They sailed upon a restless sea,
A ship of fools who couldn’t see,
They searched for love from port to port,
But never knew what love was for.

They spoke of love but never stayed,
They made their promises then walked away,
They gave their hearts then took them back,
And left another feeling cracked.

Some had been hurt along the way,
Some feared the love they claimed to crave,
Some carried anger from the past,
And wondered why no love would last.

They blamed the sea, they blamed the rain,
They blamed each other for their pain,
But never looked beneath their pride,
To see the wounds they kept inside.

One sailor said, I want to stay,
But fear came in and took him away,
Another cried, I need someone,
But ran away when love had come.

The ship kept sailing through the night,
With broken hearts beneath the light,
Each hoping someone else would see,
The lonely heart beneath the sea.

Perhaps they needed love themselves,
Before they could love someone else,
For how can hearts that cannot heal,
Know how to give another real?

So let the ship sail on its way,
Through every night and every day,
Perhaps one day those fools will learn,
That love is given, not just earned.

And when they finally understand,
That love needs more than just a hand,
They may return from where they’ve been,
And learn to love the hearts within.
