The Shadow Step
Steady footsteps on the ground.
The hallway stretches long and gray
As daylight starts to smile away
I walk along yet hear a sound,
A steady footstep on the ground.
I keep my eyes locked straight ahead.
My hollow heart is filled with dread
A sudden hill, a breath of air
Stirs the back of my neck and hair.
It mimicks every move I make
With every single step I take.
If I turn back to see its face,
I lock myself its embrace.
So down the path I quickly run
To find the safety of the sun,
But right behind the shadow stays
And follows through the darkened maze.
