The Selkie’s Mother’s Wrath

Inspired By A Chat With My Muse on Clyde Water

In Celtic and Norse mythology, selkies (also spelled silkies, sylkies, selchies) or selkie folk (Scots: selkie fowk) meaning 'seal folk'[a] are mythological beings capable of therianthropy, changing from seal to human form by shedding their skin. They are found in folktales and mythology originating from the Northern Isles of Scotland.

The aim of this poem is to tell a story , based loosely on the song “Clyde Water” (aka "The Drowned Lovers") as performed by Nic Jones (See here for my post about this wonderful man) , which has no Selkies but a controlling mother and a pair of doomed lovers.

Can I do that in poetic form? My Muse once described one of my poems as “Epic” , this may move a little in that direction , inspired by our conversation when we were listening to Nic Jones’ “Penguin Eggs”.

Please tell me what you think.

The moon is full , the sea is up

Ma I must go now to my love

He will take your skin, stay and sup

I want him , I must rise above

🐬

I will not let you go to him

You cannot stop me, I am his

And with that she swam to her swain

Her mother would not stand for this

🐬

Her lover to the Selkie’s Skin

Forever now She would be his

To Bear Him Very Fine Children

To bend to his every wish

🐬

Her daughter was stolen from her

She would conjure a tidal storm

To drown the evil kidnapper

To damn his loathsome human form

🐬

Her daughter may live if she saw sense

Without her Selkie skin she’d drown

But her love was far too intense

And her mother knew she was owned

🐬

The Tidal Wave Came , Fierce and Fast

The Selkie’s Mother’s Wrath This Was

The End For The Lovers , The Last

And The Mother Grieved At Her Loss
