THE SEA STILL KNOWS YOUR NAME
May it ever be forgotten

THE SEA STILL KNOWS YOUR NAME
I walked into the restless sea,
The letter in my hand,
The final words you gave to me,
Still followed through the sand.
You sailed beneath a quiet moon,
And promised to return,
I watched your lantern disappear,
And felt the darkness burn.
Three mornings passed, then seven more,
The harbour waited too,
But only broken timber came,
Where I expected you.
They told me not to hope again,
The storm had been too strong,
But how could all that love we held,
Be swallowed before dawn?
I wrote your name upon the shore,
The tide washed every part,
But oceans cannot steal a name,
That lives inside a heart.
Your coat still hangs behind the door,
Your boots remain below,
I keep the lamp beside the glass,
In case its light should show.
At night the waves sound like your voice,
Still calling out to me,
I run towards the water’s edge,
But find the empty sea.
Today I brought your final note,
The one I could not burn,
You wrote, My love, whatever comes,
I promise I’ll return.
I let the letter leave my hand,
It floated like a dove,
Then sank beneath the bitter waves,
That murdered all our love.
The sea may keep your sleeping bones,
Beneath its cloak of rain,
But every wave that reaches me,
Still whispers out your name.
