The Road Turned

It tilted

I sleep in.

I wake. I doze again until the afternoon, buried in my bed, beyond reach. Life makes me queasy.

All of it makes me nauseous – from the morning through the afternoon and evening. So I sleep.

Mother’s Day is warm and bright, sunshine brilliance peeking through the blinds. Ironically, I finally know, so,

I lie. To them.

I’m sorry.

An insurmountable obstacle is breaking my course. That path of hope and future.

~

A smooth, white envelope, addressed and stamped, rests in my palm.

Its crispness reminds me of a starched white button-down shirt. Sharp corners for sharp turns.

The letter quivers, shakes, as I goldfinch gulp on air, and my stomach somersaults in a swelling and throbbing world.

Future visions are blurred inside a whirlwind of dissipating dreams, bleeding into the horizon.

The ache of swollen ankles and a thickening waist tug on my knees and back and pull me back to the now of me.

Let it go. Walk your twisty path. It will be all right.

The clang of the mailbox lid rings in my ears.

I walk home, hands swinging freely, eyes straight ahead.
