THE RICH MAN’S GIRL

They called me very lucky,
Because he had such wealth,
He bought me pretty diamonds,
And dressed me like himself.

They saw the grand old mansion,
And cars outside the door,
They thought that I had everything,
And could not ask for more.

He bought me pretty flowers,
And gifts from every store,
But none of them could give me,
The love I needed more.

He thought that I was grateful,
For everything he’d bought,
But money never purchased,
The love that I had sought.

He wanted to control me,
And tell me what to wear,
He thought his wealth gave reason,
To treat me without care.

One night I packed my suitcase,
And left without a sound,
I left behind the riches,
And all that I had found.

He called me from the mansion,
And said I’d soon regret,
But freedom felt much better,
Than living with regret.

I walked away with nothing,
But finally felt free,
The richest thing I carried,
Was being true to me.
