The Power of the Book

The Gospel of the Little Black Book

Jeremy placed the key in the locker. He held his breath. His heart pounded in anticipation. What would he find? Or would the locker be empty? Jeremy was old for his tender twenty-three journeys around the sun. He was a poet and a master storyteller. As he turned the key, its story flashed forth from his random access memory. It was quite a story. He has given me permission to share it with you.

It began, as most adventures do, with a break in his routine, some arbitrary stroke of fate ... or was it destiny? If he had been more in a hurry, if he had been focused on his smartphone, if he had not dropped his subway token; if any of those things had not been true, he might never have seen the key that led to the small black notebook that utterly altered his life. He would ponder, forever, the sequence of events that led him to discover and retrieve that key.

Life is a mystery. Why do we do what we do, become what we become, have the experiences that we have? It is as if God decided to play chess with Herself, and we are the pieces in the game. Sometimes, we land on a square and our blessings and joy are manifested, and sometimes, we end up on a square where our burdens are almost more than we can bear. It matters little; what matters is the unfolding of the game.

Jeremy had been marooned on a square for months which had felt like years. Now, that no longer mattered. His was about to be placed on a different square, and he was so ready for the move.

Jeremy turned the key and opened the locker. It was empty, save for a smallish manila envelope. Jeremy grabbed the envelope and with trembling fingers, tore it open. A small black notebook fell to the floor. His first thought was, “Perhaps the owner’s name and address are written inside the front cover.” He opened it slowly. Nothing, blank! He began to page through it, hoping to find some clue as to the owner’s identity. Every page of the book was filled with writing, but, there were no addresses, no phone numbers. Instead, it appeared to be one long poem from cover to cover. This is the poem he read:

Life is a journey

From Love to Love.

Life unfolds as it will,

In the face of our other plans.

Had we only remembered

When we arrived

That Love is our Source

As well as, our Destination.

Source is not fooled

By our complexing of things.

Our Souls are not impressed

By the blows of this life.

Life and Truth are Wholly One,

And our calling was written

Before our first rising sun.

Our Journey is so simple,

But not always, easy.

At this point, I must apologize to the reader and back up (I am still learning the art of storytelling). I realize now, that I neglected to tell about Jeremey’s world on the square where he had sat for months. .Jeremy was a talented writer. His dream was to write and direct a movie that touched the hearts of billions of folks around the globe. Writing the movie had been quite fun, even easy for him... Getting discovered and producing his dream movie;to not so much. He had been earning his living, by teaching older adults to use their computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices.

Jeremy discovered rather quickly, that many older adults were lonely and just needed to share their stories and the wisdom that life had bestowed upon them. He was an excellent listener, and he genuinely cared. His reputation grew, and his business thrived among the elderly population of his county in the Ozark Mountains of Northwest Arkansas.

It was inevitable, that Jeremy would eventually meet an elderly gentleman who got excited about his movie. This gentleman was a retired lawyer who had been quite successful at his career as well as his investments. One day, when they had run out of things to say and learn, Jeremy shared his dream to produce a movie that would transform the world. Mr. Kiley was captured by the beauty of Jeremy’s script. To Jeremy’s total shock and giddy gratitude, Mr. Kiley offered to guarantee the financing of the production, if Jeremey could convince other investors to pledge $500,000 to the project.

For the past three months, Jeremy had been in New York, attempting to raise the funds required. So, that is all, I think, the reader needs to know, for me to finish this amazing tale.

I could undoubtedly, mesmerize you with the details of Jeremy’s joyful journey after discovering the little black book, but that is not my calling. The jubilant details of Jeremy’s joyful journey of movie creation and how it is transforming the world as I speak, shall be left up to you, for as we all know deeply, life is a journey and it eternally continues. For all who wish to grok the details of Jermy’s journey and ours (We are all One), just Google “The Gentle Revolution of the Heart’. You might even feel led to contribute to the unfolding tale of Jeremy and Us. Together, we are writing the movie, The Gentle Revolution of the Heart.
