The Paw Prints They Leave Behind

This is the love that never learns
to leave us when they go—
they simply change from wagging tails
to memories we know.

I'll miss the sound of your toes clip-clopping on the hardwood floor,

The way you never missed a chance to greet me at the door.

Your presence filled our house with life,
with paws upon the floor,
a hopeful face beside the door,
you loved your treats and would beg for more.

You never asked what hurt us,
or why our tears might fall.
You simply curled beside our grief
and quietly gave us your all.

You started to move slower...I thought my heart was prepared...

But on that day your pain was too great, and we all got very scared.

We cried bitterly as we laid you to rest

You are forever a good boy, the absolute very best.

And now we sit here with our grief - the silence is so loud
No collar's gentle sound,
no sleepy eyes to greet us,
no paws to race around...

We said goodbye with trembling hands,
though every part says, “Stay.”
And love becomes a thousand things
we cannot put away.

Your leash still hangs beside the door.
Your bowl remains untouched.
A favorite toy, a worn-out bed—
The tears flow heavily, we miss them so much.

But grief is the echo of love with nowhere left
to place its waiting heart.
And though their physical journey has ended here,
it cannot make us part.

For somewhere in the quiet years,
beyond our earthly view,
I hope there is a field of light
where they are waiting too.

No pain, no fear, no final breath,
just running wild and free—
and when they hear us call their name,
they'll come the way they used to be.

Until that day, I'll carry you
in every gentle rain,
in every dog I see who turns
and looks at me the same.

You were more than just a dog to me.
You were my home, my family, my friend.
And though your life felt far too short,
my love for you won't end.

So run beneath the endless sky,
my faithful, sweetest friend.
I'll follow all the paw prints
you left behind in my heart—

where love knows no bounds,
and goodbyes are not the end.

For God loves all of His creation, that includes our furry friends,
