The old lockbox
There’s times I wake up feeling lonely,
dreaming someone might be my only.
But life moves on and no one knocks,
hope stays hidden in an old lockbox.
I don’t have the key to open the door,
I’ve searched my mind a thousand times more.
No future or past can answer me why,
so I leave all my questions under the sky.
Sometimes I hear that old lock turn,
and deep in my heart the memories burn.
Faces return from years long gone,
then disappear with the coming dawn.
I remember the girl I used to be,
with dreams as wild as the restless sea.
She trusted love and believed it was true,
until life showed her what people can do.
Still she remains somewhere inside,
the girl I once was but learned how to hide.
She whispers softly, don’t give up yet,
there are parts of your life you haven’t lived yet.
Perhaps that lockbox never held love,
or answers sent from somewhere above.
Perhaps it carried the things I became,
the laughter, the tears, the scars and the pain.
I don’t need someone knocking my door,
promising things I’ve heard before.
If love should find me, then let it be true,
I won’t change myself for somebody new.
My mind is a world where nobody sees,
I wander through memories just as I please.
I write down the darkness, laughter and pain,
then turn all my losses to poetry again.
So leave that old lockbox covered in rust,
I’ve learned there are few people I trust.
The key may be missing, perhaps that’s okay,
I’ll still find a reason to smile every day.
And if one day someone should knock at my door,
I’ll know I’m not waiting for love anymore.
For whatever tomorrow is destined to be,
I’ve found something better, I’ve finally found me.
