THE NIGHT THE MOON CAME DOWN

Opening a stairway to the universe

THE NIGHT THE MOON CAME DOWN

The moon came knocking at my glass,
And whispered softly, “Come with me,
The final stars are losing light,
They’re falling in the silver sea.”

I pulled my dressing gown on tight,
Then climbed a staircase through the blue,
My little dog came racing out,
Determined she was coming too.

We found a ship beyond the clouds,
With windows made of frozen flame,
A woman placed a pen in my hand,
And told me every star needs a name.

I wrote my poems across the dark,
Each word became a spark of light,
My verses filled the empty sky,
And chased the shadows from the night.

But something hiding past the moon,
Began to swallow every word,
It ate the poems one by one,
Until not one small voice was heard.

“You cannot kill the words I wrote,
They live in every heart they find,”
The creature cracked like broken glass,
Then vanished from the human mind.

The moon returned me safely home,
Before the sun began to rise,
But left its silver pen behind,
Still glowing underneath the skies.

Now every night it writes alone,
While I lay listening in my bed,
And somewhere on a distant star,
My newest poem is being read.
