When I wake without your weight pressed against the other side of the bed,

what I'll miss most is your back.

I will lie, my face against the sun, and remember the curve of your spine

as it twisted to throw your legs over the side,

and prepare for the day ahead.

I'll miss how soft the bed felt as you stood in the kitchen brewing coffee,

and how the mattress sank back when you returned with our cups.

My body seemed to ebb against yours.

I never understood why you brushed your teeth while the water boiled.

I forgot to ask,

whether or not the coffee tasted better after the shock of peppermint.

I suppose, we never talked much in the morning,

we preferred to stroll in our own little worlds behind screens or book covers.

But the shift of the bed,

the curve of your back

and the smell of mint and instant coffee breath

are what I'll miss most.
